YOUR MOUNTAIN JOURNEY
We proudly offer complete outfitting services to the Guadalupe Mountains, Brokeoff Mountains, and surrounding areas. Guests are welcome to bring their own equipment if they have it and use our equipment on an ala-carte basis.
Please note that a wilderness backcountry permit is required for overnight stays at GUMO. While walk up permits are available at the park, it’s best to reserve your permit using www.recreation.gov. Unique to this park is that guests are required to show at least one landfill safe commercially available toilet bag.
Recommendations
-
Planning: be realistic as to what you want to do and see during your backcountry experience. Understand the differences in elevation and climate at each elevation. You need to factor in weight, weather conditions, distance, and your experience.
-
Packing: The park service requests you carry 1 gallon of water for every day you are in the park. Water is available at Pine Springs Visitor Center, Pine Springs Campground, McKittrick Visitor Center, or the Dog Canyon Ranger Station and Campground. Other points to note:
-
Plan for the weather.
-
Fires are not permitted in the park.
-
Carry a first aid kit with snake extraction supplies.
-
Have good hiking boots.
-
Remember you are responsible for your own safety.
-
-
Parking: You can park at the trailhead you are hiking on. This is a common practice but we recommend locking your car and ensuring no valuables are in sight.
